Modifying group memberships is accomplished through Active Directory Users And Computers. If you access the properties of a security principal that is to be a member of a group, you set the group membership in the Members Of tab of the Security principal s properties. If you access the container (group) that is to hold members, set the members of the container on the Members tab. Groups can be nested when the domain in which they reside is set to either the Windows 2000 native or Windows Server 2003 domain functional level. If the domain is in mixed or interim domain functional level, which means that you are still supporting Windows NT 4 domain controllers, no group nesting is possible. Changing the type or scope of a group is only possible when the domain functional level is Windows 2000 native or Windows Server 2003.

Packet filtering firewalls do the same thing as that router you just read about, but are more sophisticated. A packet filtering firewall has a set of rules, called a ruleset, and makes decisions on whether to forward the packet, or drop it, based on these rules. Stateful firewalls take this a step further, and not only look at the packets but the state or network transmission, to determine if the packet is valid. For example, if a packet is received by a firewall that is a response, or acknowledgment (ACK) packet, in a TCP three-way TCP handshake, but a SYN packet was never sent, the stateful firewall would suspect that something was not right and drop the packet. Many port scanning programs do just that. An ACK packet is sent to a computer system, even though a SYN packet, which is supposed to be sent before an ACK packet, is sent, thereby revealing information about what is being scanned. Application-layer firewalls such as Microsoft Proxy Server inspect the contents of a packet, and can choose to forward or drop a packet based on application-specific rules. A common use of application-layer firewalls is to drop browser requests for unauthorized Web sites. A stateful firewall that examined only the headers of a packet would not be capable of making decisions based on the URL of the destination Web site. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) do more than just filter traffic and drop packets. They detect intrusion and warn an administrator when an intruder is attacking the network or has compromised a server or network resource. There are two types of IDSs:

Although the Active Directory Users And Computers MMC is a convenient way to create and modify groups individually, it is not the most efficient method for creating large numbers of security principals. A tool included with Windows Server 2003, Ldifde.exe, facilitates the importing and exporting of larger numbers of security principals, including groups.

Host-based A host-based IDS operates on a particular server and looks at the audit log for any indications that a problem or an attack has occurred.

Often you will have a collection of data that already has a great deal of the information with which you will populate your Windows Server 2003 Active Directory. The data might currently be in an existing directory such as Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 Active Directory, Novell Directory Services (NDS), or some other type of database. (Human Resources departments are famous for compiling data, for example.) If you have this user data available, you can use it to populate Active Directory. Many tools are available to facilitate the transfer of data between directory services, such as Ldifde.exe. In addition, most database programs have the built-in capacity to export their data into a comma-separated value (CSV) file, which Csvde.exe can import.

Csvde, discussed in detail in 3, User Accounts, supports the creation of objects from comma-separated text files. The following example shows a .csv file that will create a group, Marketing, and populate the group with two initial members: Dan Holme and Scott Bishop. The objects listed in the member attribute must already exist in the directory service. The distinguished names (DNs) of member objects are separated by semicolons.

If you wanted, for example, to remove Don Hall from the Sales universal distribution group, you would select the Members tab, click don.hall, and then click the red cross. Clicking OK closes the Properties dialog box. You cannot delete members from a dynamic distribution group because group membership is derived dynamically from information held in Active Directory when an e-mail message is sent to the group.
