Car bodies can pose some of the greatest challenges to a modeler Most cars, especially those designed in the last 15 years, are made up of some very complex surfaces Technological advances in manufacturing and the design process have produced car bodies with very round and smooth-curving surfaces When evaluating what type of geometry to use for a modeling task, it sometimes helps to think about how the object was designed in the first place These days, almost all cars are designed in Alias Studio, which is really the father of Maya s NURBS modeling toolset So for this reason alone, using NURBS to re-create a design makes sense While the car we build here does not have to meet manufacturing standards, there are many areas on a car that require a certain amount of precision that only NURBS can deliver For one, the subtle, smooth-flowing surfaces of a car body really show off because they are covered in a very shiny, highly reflective material The slightest lump or irregularity in a surface is easily visible in the model and, in a visual effects shot, can break the illusion that the car isn t real When you add the fact that very precise details need to be cut out of the surfaces for the wheel wells, the front grill, and fuel cover, having to sculpt the vertices one by one to match the shape while at the same time not disrupting the surface that these details lie on becomes almost impossible to do without trims However, because we are building this model for animation purposes, we would like to avoid the overhead of rendering trimmed surfaces One of the most powerful modeling features you will learn about in this section is the Trim Convert function of the Rebuild Surface command As long as it obeys the four-sided nature of a NURBS surface, any trim surface can be converted into a patch Having a patch model will make tessellating the geometry easier for our rendering engine and will also allow us to produce highly accurate polygonal approximations We will talk more about this aspect of modeling in 7 For now, the description of the preceding challenges hopefully has convinced you that NURBS is a good geometry choice for modeling a car.
