SQL Server uses locks stored in memory as a way to solve concurrency problems. There are several types of locks that are used. You can find more information about the available lock types in the article Lock Compatibility in SQL Server 2005 Books Online at http:// msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa213041(SQL.80).aspx. Following are the locks that you need to know about for this lesson:

Shared or S-locks Shared locks are sometimes referred to as read locks. There can be several shared locks on any resource (such as a row or a page) at any one time. Shared locks are compatible with other shared locks.

You can configure a SAN with any combination of RAID levels previously discussed. You can also configure the storage within the array by using either a file system approach or a full disk approach.

In SQL Server 2005, members of the db_owner fixed database role can drop a database. This is a change of behavior from SQL Server 2000.

In a file system configuration, small portions of many disk drives are combined together into a storage unit, which is then presented to the operating system as if it were a single disk drive. An example of a file system configuration is shown in Figure 7-7.

Exclusive or X-locks Exclusive locks are also referred to as write locks. Only one exclusive lock can exist on a resource at any time. Exclusive locks are not compatible with other locks, including shared locks. Update or U-locks Update locks can be viewed as a combination of shared and exclusive locks. An update lock is used to lock rows when they are selected for update, before they are actually updated. Update locks are compatible with shared locks, but not with other update locks. Lesson 2, Designing Transactions and Optimizing Locking, discusses update locks further.

When you add a user account to a fixed database role, you should (as always) apply the principle of least privilege to ensure that database access is implemented securely and is compliant with the security policy. Fixed database roles can be mapped to SQL Server 2005 permissions, as listed in Table 11-4.

With a file system configuration, you can enable many more spindles to be used for read-and-write operations than would normally be possible. This type of configura tion provides improved performance for online transaction processing (OLTP) types of applications that primarily execute random I/O requests.

All isolation levels always issue exclusive locks for write operations and hold the locks for the entire duration of the transaction. In the next sections, you will look at how shared locks are handled by the different isolation levels. To see which locks are currently being held, you can query the sys.dm_tran_locks dynamic management view or execute the sys.sp_lock system stored procedure.

You construct a full disk configuration by configuring one or more disks in their entirety into a storage unit. This storage unit is then presented to the operating system as a single disk drive. An example of this configuration is shown in Figure 7-8.

Which lock types are acquired by SQL Server depends on the active transaction isolation level. The type of isolation level used can significantly affect both the performance and the results of executed queries.

A full disk configuration ensures that the entire disk is used for a single purpose. This type of configuration provides good performance for data warehouse types of appli cations that generally execute large-volume, sequential read-and-write operations.
